Master’s Thesis

Each student is required to complete a Master’s Thesis during the third (3rd) semester, following the official guidelines. The Master’s Thesis must have a clearly defined research character, address contemporary topics in the field of Nursing Science, and its content should align with the mission of the Postgraduate Program (MSc).

The postgraduate student submits an application stating the proposed title of the thesis, the proposed supervisor, and attaches the research protocol to the Secretariat of the MSc program. The thesis may be written either in Greek or in English.

The supervisor and the members of the examination committee are appointed by the Department Assembly of the Nursing Department, following a proposal by the Coordinating Committee, provided that they hold a doctoral degree.

Faculty members authorized to supervise theses submit their proposed thesis topics to the Secretariat.

To receive approval, the student must publicly defend the thesis before the three-member examination committee (1 supervisor and 2 faculty members), on a date and at a venue set by the Department Assembly, based on a proposal by the MSc Program Director. The thesis is graded by the committee members immediately after the defense. Approval requires agreement from two-thirds (2/3) of the committee members.

Submission Procedure for Master’s Thesis Examination:

  • 1
The thesis must be submitted to the Supervisor for approval or revisions no later than the end of January.
  • 2
After the Supervisor’s approval, the student sends the thesis to the other two members of the three-member Advisory Committee for approval or revisions.
  • 3

Once all three members of the Advisory Committee have positively evaluated the thesis, the student submits an application to the Secretariat of the MSc Program for public defense and examination. The application must include the signed positive evaluations from all members of the Advisory Committee.

  • 4

The MSc Program Director sets the date and time for the public defense before all members of the Advisory Committee.

  • 5
Following the public defense, the committee evaluates and grades the thesis.
  • 6
If the thesis or the public defense is deemed unsatisfactory and the student receives a failing grade (below 5), the committee may request revisions or modifications to part or all of the thesis. In this case, the committee sets a specific deadline for the student to resubmit the revised thesis based on their feedback.

Approved Master’s Theses must be submitted by the students to the university library in one (1) electronic copy and uploaded to the official website of the University of Thessaly Institutional Repository http://ir.lib.uth.gr and the MSc Program’s website “Advanced Nursing Practice”.

Regarding matters of confidentiality, data protection, and ethical standards, the Nursing Department has established an Internal Three-Member Research Ethics and Deontology Committee.

For approval by this committee, candidates must submit: (1) an application for review, (2) a description of the research proposal, (3) research protocols, consent forms, and any other supporting documents required based on the field of study.

Templates for these documents are available on the University of Thessaly website at: https://www.uth.gr/panepistimio/thesmika/themata-deontologias.

After the proposal review, the Research Ethics and Deontology Committee of the Nursing Department issues a Certificate of Approval for the Master’s Thesis proposal. If the application is rejected or the committee members disagree, the matter is referred to the University of Thessaly’s central Research Ethics Committee. Approval certificates are uploaded to the Quality Assurance Unit (MODIP) information system.
